Google has started testing ads for pharmaceutical products, including prescription drugs, inside AI Mode and AI Overviews in the United States. A Google spokesperson confirmed the test to Adweek, and Search Engine Roundtable reported it on October 13. It brings what Adweek called one of advertising's most regulated categories into Google's AI answers.

What happened

According to Adweek, a Google spokesperson said the company is "testing standard text and Shopping ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews", which it "recently expanded to include certain pharmaceutical products." The ads appear in sections labelled "Sponsored". Adweek reported that the testing began this month and is limited to the US.

Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable, writing up the Adweek report, said Google told him there were "no recent policy changes here." In other words, the existing drug and healthcare ad rules still apply. Schwartz also said he searched for pharmaceutical ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode and "did not spot any myself", which suggests the test is small.

ContentGrip, which covered the test on October 14, reported that Google's healthcare and medicines policy still applies, including certification for pharmaceutical manufacturers. It also reported that prescription drug advertisers are not being placed in Google's more experimental AI ad formats.

Why it matters

This goes further than Google's earlier healthcare test. In June, Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed on LinkedIn a "small test of ads in AI Mode for the healthcare vertical", according to Search Engine Roundtable. That first phase covered US English queries only, and only creatives that do not use pinning or text disclaimers.

That limit mattered. Prescription drug ads usually depend on disclaimers and safety language. Search analytics firm Adthena studied 50,000 US placements in AI Mode in August. It found 491 health-adjacent advertisers serving ads, and wrote: "We did not find a single ad from a major pharmaceutical manufacturer." The new test is the first sign that branded drug ads may join them.

For advertisers, a paid slot next to an AI-generated answer is new territory, and the rules for regulated categories are still being worked out in public.

What this means for healthcare marketers

The test is small and US-only, so most healthcare brands will not see it yet. But the direction is clear: paid and organic results are meeting inside AI answers. Brand and growth leaders in healthcare should act on three fronts.

First, get compliance ready. If your category needs Google's pharmaceutical certification, make sure it is current in every market you serve. A new placement is not a looser rulebook.

Second, check what the AI answer says before your ad appears. A sponsored slot sits next to the generated response, not in place of it. If that answer describes your condition, treatment or brand wrongly, your ad inherits that context. Audit how AI Overviews, AI Mode and other assistants describe your products, and fix the pages they draw on.

Third, plan for two shelves. Organic visibility inside AI answers, the work of generative engine optimization, now sits alongside paid reach. That is the space ADFLU's SEO and GEO service works in: getting brands ranked in Google and cited accurately in AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Then watch where the test goes. The signals to look for are wider formats, more markets and more languages.

The bottom line

Google is quietly opening its AI answers to drug advertising. The test is small today. Healthcare brands that put their compliance, content and AI visibility in order now will be ready when it grows.
